FORENSICS UNIT

The Forensics Unit is comprised of six sections which encompass Crime Scene, DNA Screening, Latent Examination, Property & Evidence, Body Worn Cameras and Firearms. Each of these functions is vital to the collection, examination, and storage of evidence that will be used in court to prosecute criminals. The crime scene technicians and DNA technicians are well trained and equipped with technical devices that enable the necessary evidence to be collected and processed. This involves screening for DNA, fingerprinting, photography, videography and other processing methods including the use of special chemicals, light sources, or visual enhancement devices to identify offenders. Our Body Worn Camera administrator oversees the management of thousands of videos per month being stored and processes public records requests. Our Firearms detective test fires weapons and reviews all firearms incidents for potential relations and evidence needs.

New Schedule for Retrieving Property

The only days property will be released to the public are Tuesday and Wednesday between the hours of 0830-1630. (8:30AM-4:30PM) To schedule an appointment to retrieve property, members of the public need to call 352-368-3565.  If there is no answer, a recording will pick up and a property technician will call the citizen back to arrange a time for pickup. For Firearms taken as a result of a Civil Injunction use this form. A background check through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be conducted prior to any firearm release. This procedure will minimize the wait time for the public for releases.
