TABLE TOP TRAINING EXERCISE – SCHOOL SHOOTING SCENARIO

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Ocala Police Department, Marion County Fire Rescue, Ocala Fire Rescue and Central Florida Community College will conduct a table top training exercise on Friday September 25, 2009 scheduled from 8:30am until 1:00pm at Central Florida Community College, Ewers Center - Bldg 40.

This exercise will test the response and coordinated efforts of emergency personnel to a gunman or multiple gunmen on the community college campus. A Gubernatorial Task Force for University Campus Safety appointed by Governor Crist after other university incidents like the Virginia Tech shooting provided Law Enforcement and Universities statewide with multiple recommendations to safely protect students that attend all Universities and Community Colleges in the State of Florida. The recommendations of the task force have been included in to the scenario.

These training exercises are scheduled annually between the Marion County schools and law enforcement, fire and medical personnel. Another full-scale functional training exercise will be conducted on November 6, 2009 at CFCC utilizing first responder personnel. This table top exercise will assist with preparing our incident commanders while the full-scale functional training exercise will assist with training first responders.

Media wanting to cover this exercise may contact Major Terry Bovaird at 352-427-3138.
