DEPUTY INVOLVED SHOOTING ENDS IN ARREST

At approximately 7:10 this evening, deputies responded to 20850 SE 144th Lane in the Big Scrub area in reference to a domestic dispute. Family members reported a man had barricaded himself inside the residence and threatened suicide. The man had also threatened to harm others and burn his house down.

When Deputy Zachary Hughes approached the front door of the home, he observed suspect, 81-year-old, W/M, Thomas Tavernier, to have a gun as he made threatening remarks. Deputy Hughes warned Tavernier to put his weapon down but he would not comply. Tavernier then fired his weapon at Deputy Hughes through a window, causing several facial injuries from shattered glass. Deputy Hughes was able to return fire. Sheriff’s Office Captain Pistarelli was able to talk Tavernier into putting his weapon down and coming out of the house.

Tavernier received minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Once he is released, he will be arrested and charged accordingly. Deputy Hughes was also transported to a local hospital.

Aviation, K-9, SWAT and Negotiations teams also responded to the scene.
