On 10-14-09, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a Lions Club member of a possible theft of funds from the Lions Club Eyeglass Recycling Center at 3838 Gainesville Road. The member reported while conducting a business transaction with the company that purchases the recycled eyeglasses, he became aware that another fellow Lion, Lowell Rice, was receiving checks in his name.
An investigation revealed Rice had received checks since August 2001 for a total amount of $53,000. Rice was allegedly stealing the money to pay his medical bills.
