TRAFFIC UNIT

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit currently consists of four motor units. The unit utilizes BMW R1250 RT-P motorcycles. The motorcycles are equipped with radar units, computers, and printers to help the deputies with traffic enforcement. Deputies must complete an 80-hour police motorcycle course prior to being accepted into the unit. This helps ensure their safety while riding and enforcing traffic. Monthly training is also conducted to ensure the deputies stay proficient in their riding.

The main objective of the Traffic Unit is the reduction of traffic-related injuries and fatalities through proactive enforcement. This includes speed enforcement as well as pedestrian and bicycle safety. The units respond to complaints throughout Marion County and support patrol with the help of directing traffic at accident scenes and assisting with escorts. These escorts include funerals, parades as well as presidential and dignitaries.
