SHERIFF AGNES MCGEHEE
Agnes Albritton McGehee was appointed Sheriff within hours of her husband’s death by Governor LeRoy Collins on July 13, 1960. She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Andrew Albritton.
She served for about four months till August 2, 1960, when the Governor Appointed Charles Thomas to fill out the final months of F. L. McGehee’s term. She is the one and only female to serve as Sheriff of Marion County. F. L. and Agnes McGehee’s son, Lee McGehee, would later be the Chief of Police of Ocala.
Chief Lee McGehee would serve the city of Ocala for twenty years. Upon retiring he went to work with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) where he started their executive leadership programs. F. L. McGehee was a respected and well-liked Sheriff.
